Why Handmade?

Being part of the handmade community has been an extraordinary pleasure! I thought it might be fitting to dedicate a blog post to the joys and benefits of buying goods directly from the artists, instead of commercial items. So what better way to get input on all things handmade than Etsy?! I posted a thread in the Etsy forums asking buyers and sellers alike about their reasons for shopping, loving and supporting handmade.

Here is what they told me.....

"Heart, soul, mindfulness, thoughtfulness, imagination, supporting local and micro economies, supporting a lot of moms and women in their industries who are working to be independent from what ever or for whatever reasons. Putting a smile on a child's face with a one-of-a-kind toy or seeing a friend or family member love a gift almost as much as it was made with love. These are just a few of my reasons for shopping hand made, not just at Christmas, but all year."  CecilBobby

"I love to create and was so excited to buy from fellow Etsians this Christmas to support their creativity. One of a kind pieces made with love just like mine are. " mahandbags

"The uniquness. the artistry. imagination come to life. " ThisMuchLove

"Mass production is good for washing machines or cars but not for things touching human and everyday objects, with which it maintains relationship beyond the usual ..." Quibus

"Handmade items are a piece of the artists' heart and soul. They're made with love, which is something that mass produced items don't have." Onbendedneedle

"Because it is made by someone else, just like me, who has fussed over it to make it as nice as it possibly can be... all to make someone else happy."  WildcatLeatherCo

" Creativity that is tangable, it's incredible."  apaperbuffet

"Oooohhh, so many reasons:

1. Because I can.
2. Because it allows someone, a human I'm interacting with, to be able to support themselves, their kids, their cat, their dog, their significant other, you get the idea.
3. Because it is helping in the realization of someone's dream.
4. Because I can ask it to be as special as I want it to be.
5. Because it makes me feel like I am part of a community.
6. Because it's fun and exciting to meet new people and artists.
7. Because I do handmade myself and can't imagine NOT supporting others who do it also. "

Artist Feature - Twillypop on Etsy

As you know I love to do occasional artist features and Sara's shop Twillypop really caught my eye!  I  asked her to tell me a little about herself, her unique creations, and her inspiration.....

"I'm a stay-at-home mom with 3 "chickens", as I call them. I have a 9 year-old girl, an 8 year-old boy and a "baby" boy who is just about to turn five(I'm in denial and still calling him 4). The job of wife and mother occupies most of my time. I do have other hobbies...I love to read when I can find the time, I also like to run and lift weights. My ideal 'mommy's Saturday morning out' usually consists of a long workout.
Twillypop simply started with the idea for the ribbon necklaces just this past August. I just love color and realized that with ribbons and beads, the possibilities are endless!

My design aesthetic: I tend to make what I think looks pretty. I can't really put a name on it except to say that I know what I like to look at and run with that. I tend to be a person who likes to be aware of trends, but to follow only the ones that reasonably fit into my lifestyle. I like to look updated, but I lean toward the classic and pretty. Simply stated, I like to make pretty things!
My inspiration comes from a lot of different places....sometimes I will meet a woman or girl who strikes me and I think, "what would she look like as a necklace?" (that sounds a lot crazier that I would like, but it's true!)
I also draw some inspiration from nature, as with "Twilight" and "Wendy", or inspiration could come when I see a certain bead or ribbon that gets my mind going..."

The Joy of Handmade...Even On The Blackest of Fridays

I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday! The pecan pie was extraordinary and the Thanksgiving feast a blast! Did anyone try that recipe? My only complaint- it needs more whiskey! But perhaps that's just me.

Now to catch everyone up on the fun things happening in and around the shop this month....

As you know this is Black Friday. I like to steer clear of the frenzy and support some of my fellow Estians by browsing some of the unique shops on Etsy for things I may need. In fact, I just purchased some lovely artwork from an Etsy friend in France. You may recognize Sabbio from my previous gift guide!

As for my own shop I am offering free shipping  to U.S. and Canada on everything until the 30th! I invite you stop in and take a peek!

And please don't forget to enter the giveaway to win my "Native" necklace below. The giveaway ends on the 30th and this is my biggest one yet! Click here for details.

And just one more exciting happening this month. My treasury entitled "If Sherlock Were A Woman...." made it to the front page of Etsy! A first for me!
